28th Annual Purina Dog Surfing Competition in Huntington Beach

This past weekend, the waves at Huntington Beach weren’t the only things making a splash — dogs did too, and in serious style!

The 28th annual Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge turned up the heat (and the cuteness) as America’s most athletic canines competed in a dazzling display of skill, agility, and heart. Think high-flying frisbee catches, gravity-defying dock dives, and yes — actual dog surfing! If the Met Gala had a sporting cousin in the canine world, this would be it.

More than just a showcase of talent, the event serves as the Western Regional Qualifier for the national stage. But don’t let the “challenge” part fool you — for these pups and their humans, it’s more than a competition. It’s a lifestyle. One filled with routines, regimens, and recovery gear fit for elite athletes.

“They are treated like pro athletes,” said Amanda Fleck, dog mom and weekend competitor. “We have a workout schedule to keep them in top form.”

Behind the scenes, it’s equal parts intensity and puppy playdates. While some pet parents bring Olympic-level focus, most are there for the magic: the splashy sports, the sunshine, and the sparkling camaraderie among dog lovers.

“It’s just fun. She loves the water. She’s a retriever. It’s great to be outdoors and seeing the same people at some of the events over and over,” shared Lori Andersen. “Everybody’s so friendly.”

The energy? Impeccable. The outfits? Athletic chic. The vibes? Off the leash!

And yes — the judges have their paws full. While most fur families are full of good vibes and great sportsmanship, judge Kama Rueschenberg admitted that tensions can sometimes flare on the sidelines. After all, when your four-legged star is chasing victory, it’s hard not to be passionate.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the final scores rolled in, it became clear: this isn’t just a contest — it’s a celebration. A celebration of the bond between dogs and humans. Of training and teamwork. Of paws and purpose.

The Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge continues to prove that the most powerful force on four legs might just be joy.
