The Johnson Pack: A Man & His Dogs

With a career spanning more than five decades, Don Johnson is a true Hollywood icon. From Miami Vice to Nash Bridges, Django Unchained, Knives Out, and Watchmen, Johnson has brought depth, swagger, and a signature smirk to every role he’s ever touched. But beyond red carpets and cult classics, like A Boy and His Dog, his most meaningful role may be the one he plays at home, as a devoted dog dad and father. In this exclusive DOGUE feature, Johnson invites us into his off-screen world, where life revolves around his beloved dogs, Rufus and Thunder— two personalities who couldn’t be more different.

Meet Rufus Johnson

Imported from Germany by a world-renowned dog trainer, Rufus is the definition of canine cool. As Kelley Johnson shares, “He lived with his dog mom until he was a young adult. And I think it made a huge impact. He’s incredibly kind and gentle—but when he’s in protection mode, he’s all business.”

A sleek, all-black, 80-pound German Shepherd born in Germany and trained in Schutzhund, Rufus is both protector and companion. He’s refined, loyal, and surprisingly cultured. “He responds to Cookie faster than his own name.”

Rufus’ life is filled with ocean swims, high-end treats, and adventures with his best friend Lucky, another German Shepherd, on “Dog Pack” outings led by Montecito’s own canine whisperer.

Meet Thunder Johnson

If Rufus is the composed guardian, Thunder is the charming rebel. Adopted at just nine weeks old, Thunder quickly made a name for himself as a neighborhood escape artist. As Kelley recalls, “For most of his life, he ran away every day. We’d get calls saying he was on someone’s couch, in their pool… even in their bed.”

Now 12, Thunder has settled into a semi-retired lifestyle, though his personality is as big as ever. He’s a Jack Russell Parsons terrier with the energy of a rock star and the comedic timing of a sitcom legend. He still watches TV obsessively and “barks ferociously at the Progressive Insurance commercials.

A Bond Beyond the Screen

Johnson’s connection to dogs runs deep. Growing up with them on his family’s Missouri farm, that bond only intensified during the filming of A Boy and His Dog.

“We’ve had many dogs in our lives,” Don says. “Rufus is our fourth German Shepherd, and Thunder is our third Jack Russell. So we clearly have a type, or two.”

Reflecting on his work with canine co-star, in A Boy and His Dog, he shares, “We had a wonderful bond. It was hard to say goodbye when the film wrapped.”

And when asked about acting alongside a dog in such a unique setting: “The dog doesn’t actually talk, which was a surprise to me, because in the script, he had dialogue.”

Style, Setting & DOGUE Vision

For this DOGUE shoot, fashion met storytelling in a bold, luxurious way. We envisioned a Fursace-aesthetic— wild and bold, complete with handcrafted gold, croc-embossed collars with layered oversized chains and gilded accents. Set against a lush, Roman-inspired garden, the shoot captured both dogs in their essence: Rufus, the poised protector turned poetic muse, and Thunder, the charismatic scene-stealer. And, for the cover look, vibrant handmade silk bow ties and delicate floral elements brought softness and elegance, transforming strength into artistry.

The Heart of the Johnson Pack

Together, Rufus and Thunder embody yin and yang energies—action and comedy, protector and prankster. Life in the Johnson household is filled with sunshine, snacks, and the occasional lizard chase. But beyond the charm and humor, what stands out most is the connection. Don’s love for dogs intertwines in a way that feels genuine and grounding. In a world driven by fame and spectacle, the Johnson Pack is a reminder that the most meaningful relationships are often the simplest ones. And, the real magic isn’t just in the roles we play— it’s in the bonds we build.
