Wave Riders Make a Splash at the World Dog Surfing Championships

Move over, Baywatch — the real stars of the California coast wear life vests and have four legs. The World Dog Surfing Championships just hit Pacifica Beach, and it was paws-itively legendary.

Among the wave-catching elite was Charlie, a 10-year-old yellow Lab with an obsession for surfboards so intense, his humans have to hide it if they want a break on the beach. No leash required — just say “wave,” and Charlie bolts straight for the sea.

Held just south of San Francisco, this annual event draws thousands of spectators and dozens of determined doggos, from terriers to spaniels, all ready to paddle out, pop up, and hang ten. Clad in monogrammed life jackets and riding vibrant boards, these pups weren’t just adorable — they were athletes.

Pups were judged on everything from balance to bravado, with extra points for tricks like mid-wave turns or stylish stances. But this competition was about more than just medals. It was about connection, confidence, and showing the world what’s possible — especially for one standout team.

Iza, a petite French bulldog with a big spirit, won her very first solo heat this year. Her human, David Fasoli, taught her to surf in a swimming pool during the pandemic — despite having only one hand himself. Together, they’ve defied every expectation. “A nonsporting human and a nonsporting breed — we are kind of phenomenal,” he shared. And he’s right.

Back in the extra-large heat, Charlie returned to the water — this time, surfing tandem with fellow Labs in a team aptly named The Dream Team. While Charlie rode the waves, his human Jeff scouted the perfect swells and sent him gliding toward Maria onshore — no treats needed, just pure love for the surf.

Charlie’s teammate Rosie, a 4-year-old yellow Lab from Santa Cruz, surfed in four heats and was still wagging with excitement. Her human, Steve Drottar, says their shared surf sessions deepen their bond in ways a walk never could. “It’s like she’s saying, ‘Thank you,’” he told reporters. “We did something real together.”

In the world of dog fashion and lifestyle, surfing has become the ultimate expression of joy, freedom, and teamwork. Whether you’re gliding solo or tandem with your ride-or-die pack, riding waves is about trust, courage, and a little splash of style.

And at DOGUE, we celebrate dogs who dare — whether it’s on the runway or the Pacific Ocean.
